An avid gardener with a lovely home overlooking Newport Beach, Julie kept her garden manicured and neat all of the time. She had recently become interested in topiary. She had attended some classes and decided to start training her own trees. She purchased some Lilly Pillies and a weeping fig.
Julie set to work making her living sculpture and was really chuffed when she had crafted the lilly pilly into a ball shape to adorn her front porch. The weeping fig was only about a meter tall so she potted it up and tended to it regularly and loved all of the different shade of green the leaves turned.
Months on and Julie had two beautiful examples of topiary spirals. She was really happy with the plants and people commented on how amazing they looked. She decided that the weeping fig was taking too long to grow so she took it out of the pot and planted in the back yard.
After 12 months the weeping fig was growing bigger and she delighted in the beautiful shades from apple green to avocado through to an English green it was truly beautiful. The trunk was getting thicker and the tree was growing much taller than Julie would have imagined, if only she knew the truth about this pretty green tree. If she had done some research before planting the tree as it is stated that the roots grow rapidly invading gardens, growing under and lifting foot paths, patios, and driveways. The ficus benjamina is not recommended for residential planting as it can grow 30 meters and beyond.
Now a few year on from her initial planting and the little ficus had grown and grown and it was hungry! What better way to feed a big tree than a constant source of nutrients and water running right past its root system, yes the earthenware sewer pipes. Slowly the root enveloped the pipes and crushed them allowing the tree roots to penetrate the line and slowly block it.
Julie and Clive first noticed that the toilet was gurgling and was slow to flush and over a short time the toilet would not drain at all. “It’s time we called the plumber!” Clive exclaimed.
Your Neighbourhood Plumber had worked in Newport for years so he was the plumber to call for the blocked drain. The Plumber had a water jetter that he used to try and clear the blockage but found it was severe and he could not get through it. He identified the section and suggested that due to the fig tree probably being the problem that he dig up and replace the section. When he reached the section of pipe in question, he found that the tree roots had penetrated the sewer and grown at least 2 meters to the exact shape of the pipework. It looked like a huge snake that he retrieved from the sewer pipes. He was able to rerun the sewer and had in working by the next afternoon.
It was at this point Clive contact the council and had permission to have the tree removed as it was likely to cause more damage in the future.
